A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
