Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with player absences after confirming that forward Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been out since August following an operation on his knee. Hoped to come back earlier in December, the manager stated the player hit a snag when stepping up his recovery and was unable to move forward “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is far more dependable and has more options,” stated the manager.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also an option following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Linger

Additional concerns affect centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Chelsea match. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on new players during the summer has resulted in a much stronger position to navigate such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

Questioned if a larger pool of players was helping their championship push, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, as this campaign has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the situation with the backline,” he continued.

“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Commenting on the setback highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered further detail. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have unlocked that.”

He shared his eagerness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his character, his nature. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”

“His playing record is phenomenal, he's rarely been injured, and I can’t wait to have him back around the team and playing because I feel it’s going to be a massive boost.”
