Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on harmony has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
