Fury Explodes as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke
Individuals from across the political divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a vile and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the remarks. She referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Party
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to defend the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
