Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
