Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, so additional clothing vital, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Warnings Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely paramount.
