Plans for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders suggesting the president had urged him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a peace initiative endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, suggesting that halting hostilities would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a series of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently came ahead of speculation that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he added.
