The English Team to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not staged an England men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Rally
The championship was inaugurated at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were barracked as they approached the site by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel’s national side to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were displayed with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Fixture List
The opening game of the European Championship will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will include Wales if they make it.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help engage a broader range of viewers.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are due to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Venues and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and The North London arena complete the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at the national stadium of each host.
The qualifying draw will be staged in Belfast, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.
