The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
