During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the past of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements this season, the significance of the encounter originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
