Winter Weather Systems Claim Five Lives in Gaza Amidst Dire Conditions in Makeshift Shelters.

Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents housing Palestinians displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing at least 4 individuals. These deaths highlights the perilous living conditions that persist after more than 24 months of devastating bombardment and severe shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Harsh Elements

While a truce has been active from last fall, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the adequate housing necessary to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, said on Tuesday that the deceased include two women, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"The world has enabled us to experience death in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, 3 members of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed onto their dwelling in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday started removing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Ongoing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population live in improvised shelters since their homes were turned into ruins over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Truce

Local health authorities, part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty people have been killed by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals after the ceasefire began. The ministry maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 males and forty females – had been killed since the ceasefire began due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, airstrikes, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. Those figures, he explained, represented incidents where sufficient details had been gathered to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' during the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms away while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is badly needed throughout the colder season. This marks the 3rd cold season after the conflict involving the state and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered approximately 1,200 people and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
